How Does the IPL Points Table Work?

The IPL points system is straightforward, with teams accumulating points according to their results during the 14-match league stage.

• Points allocation: A team receives two points for a win and zero points for a loss. In a match that produces no result, each team receives one point. The playing conditions also provide one point for certain matches that do not commence, subject to the relevant regulations.

• League position: Teams are primarily ranked according to the total number of points they have accumulated.

• Net Run Rate: NRR is used to separate teams when they finish level on points and have the same number of wins. It measures the difference between a team's average runs scored per over and its average runs conceded per over.

• Equal points: Under the 2026 playing conditions, the tiebreak sequence starts with the number of league wins. If teams are still level, the higher net run rate determines the higher position. If they remain level after that, the competition regulations provide further statistical tiebreakers.

What Does NRR Mean in the IPL?

NRR stands for Net Run Rate and is one of the most important statistics in the IPL points table.

A team's NRR is calculated by comparing its average scoring rate with the average scoring rate of its opponents across the league season.

In simple terms:

NRR = Average runs scored per over - Average runs conceded per over

A positive NRR means a team has scored runs at a faster rate than its opponents overall, while a negative NRR means the opposite.

NRR can become particularly important towards the end of the league stage. In IPL 2026, for example, RCB, GT and SRH all finished on 18 points and nine wins, so their respective NRRs determined their positions in the table.

IPL Playoff Qualification

Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals met in the Eliminator, with Rajasthan winning by 47 runs to move into Qualifier 2.

RCB, GT and SRH all finished with nine league wins and 18 points. RCB's superior NRR gave them first place, while GT and SRH occupied the second and third positions respectively.

Rajasthan Royals secured fourth place with eight wins and 16 points. Their +0.189 NRR was comfortably behind Punjab Kings' +0.309, but Rajasthan finished above Punjab because they had one more league point.

Punjab Kings ended the season in fifth place with seven wins, six losses and one no-result, leaving them one point outside the playoff places.

Delhi Capitals finished sixth with 14 points, while Kolkata Knight Riders were seventh on 13. Chennai Super Kings finished eighth with 12 points.

Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants both finished on eight points, but Mumbai occupied ninth position because their NRR of -0.584 was better than LSG's -0.740.

How Many Points Are Needed to Reach the IPL Playoffs?

There is no fixed points total that guarantees playoff qualification every season because the cutoff depends on how closely the teams are grouped in the standings.

However, 16 points is often an important benchmark because it represents eight wins from a 14-match league campaign.

In IPL 2026, 16 points were enough for Rajasthan Royals to secure fourth place. Punjab Kings finished fifth with 15 points, demonstrating how a single point can make the difference in a closely contested playoff race.

The IPL league format has changed as the competition has expanded.

The inaugural 2008 season featured eight teams. As the tournament expanded to 10 franchises, the league adopted a format based on two virtual groups while maintaining a single overall points table.

Under the current structure, each team plays 14 league matches. A team plays five opponents twice and the remaining four opponents once, giving every franchise seven home and seven away league matches under the standard format.
